My Troop Donation Effort

(Click on an image for a larger view)

In October 2006 I was forwarded an email from one of our U.S. Troops that
he wrote to his Dad. It was a very touching email and it talked about some of
the living conditions and events on the ground in Afghanistan. It inspired me
to step up and do something to make a difference.

I worked for a fairly large company and knew that it would be ideal for some
type of collection event. I put together an email to send out to all of the
employees and setup some donation barrels. I would also take in cash
donations if folks didn't have time to pick anything up.

I managed to collect $700 in cash donations and twenty-five 60 minute calling
cards. I used the $700 in donations to purchase 400lbs of various food and
personal items to send to the troops (pics below).

Several weeks after I shipped over the items via USPS I received an email
from a chaplain who had taken part in the process of distributing the 400lbs
of goods to different units stationed in Afghanistan. He emailed over some
pictures of the guys taking part in a worship service on top of where they
were stationed in Afghanistan.

In May 2007 I began another collection campaign at my company. I chose
to accept cash for this donation so I could go to Sam's and purchase items in
bulk versus having individual items donated. My company also donated fifty
60 minute calling cards once again and paid for the shipping of the items. In
the second round of donations I collected $1,750 in cash and we shipped
over 840lbs of goods.

Within just a few short weeks I had received a letter in the mail and also a
card from one of the troops. It was awesome to know that a Colonel would
take the time out of his busy day to write me and to let me know that the
items arrived safely and he also sent over a copy of their Guard newsletter.

It was only a few days after receiving the letters that I received a call from
a SGT who was in town and he wanted to drop something off. I was surprised
and was overwhelmed that someone on leave would take time out to stop in
and see me. My efforts were small compared to the efforts the troops are
putting forth day after day.

I was called to the lobby at work and was presented with a plaque from one of
the S.C. Guard units serving in Baghdad. They had all signed the plaque. I was
also presented with a flag that they flew over their camp in Baghdad for a day
in honor of my efforts. Words couldn't describe the appreciation I felt for the
visit and for the gift they had left me. The plaque was coated in 14K gold with
the words "Sincere Thanks" in Arabic.
